As Muslim mothers, we often juggle many responsibilities, but one of the most important gifts you can give your child or teen is your full attention. Active listening is a powerful tool for emotionally connecting with them.
When your child or teen talks to you, put away distractions like your phone or TV.
Look them in the eye and listen to their words without interrupting. Even if it’s something small, showing genuine interest in their feelings makes them feel heard and validated.
Try to reflect back what you hear, like “It sounds like you’re feeling frustrated about school today.” This simple act helps them feel understood.
Remember, active listening doesn’t just mean hearing words—it’s about connecting to their emotions and offering empathy. When they know you’re there, emotionally available, they’ll be more likely to share their thoughts and challenges.
Tip: Make listening a daily habit, even in the smallest moments. Your connection with your child or teen will deepen, and so will their trust in you In Shaa Allah.
